Responsibilities and Duties

Responsible for the management and continuous improvement of the purchasing department, ensuring the purchase of quality products at the most competitive prices, delivered on time to ensure that the company operates effectively. Developing and implementing the vision, strategy, and functions of the department in line with the overall business objectives.

We are looking to appoint a high performing individual with at least 3 years of purchasing experience within the manufacturing industry. Someone who has a strong technical understanding of electronic components and engineering concepts, that can comprehend engineering drawings and technical requirements and can communicate such information effectively.

The candidate should have demonstrable experience in leading and developing a high performing purchasing team within the manufacturing environment. With expertise in sourcing, purchasing, supplier management and negotiation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure that purchasing strategies and processes are in place to meet business objectives and operational needs
  • Provide leadership to the purchasing department. Recruit, coach, mentor and develop direct reports and manage a high performing team that delivers continuous improvement, added value and cost reductions
  • Ensure supply chain continuity of correct specification, quality, cost and OTD of all parts, materials, and products
  • Create and implement best practices, purchasing vision, strategy, policies, processes, and procedures to aid and improve business performance
  • Set department objectives and monitor ongoing progress and performance
  • Responsible for managing relationships and negotiating with key suppliers at a senior and strategic level
  • Source new and alternative suppliers to reduce costs, improve quality and meet the business needs
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a supplier relationship and evaluation process to measure effective supplier performance and compliance
  • Manage the process for non-conforming supplier product
  • Work closely with Research Development to source new and alternative suppliers to reduce costs, improve quality and meet the business needs
  • Fill in and support all purchasing functions as needed

Essential skills and experience required:

  • Educated to degree level (preferably Masters) in a relevant commercial or engineering course
  • Preferably a Fellow or Member of The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS)
  • Demonstrable experience of leading a purchasing function with a proven track record in strategic purchasing leadership delivering effective purchasing strategies, policies, processes, and systems
  • Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to optimise team performance and development
  • Experience in strategic purchasing within a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in purchasing electronic components for production volumes
  • Ability to add value, reduce costs and make business improvements
  • Proven contract management and supplier experience
  • Experience of operating and influencing at a strategic level
  • Proficient with MS Office and Windows; (Excel; Advanced)
  • Experience of Sage Line 50 is desirable
